After retiring, George Washington
took over his father’s plantation
and became a producer of crops. He
married a wealthy widow named
Martha Custis, who was experienced
in the managing of a plantation.
They raised Martha’s offspring
from her previous marriage.
George Washington and Martha
Custis never had any children, the
reason probably being the fact that
Washington had suffered from
smallpox in 1751, and the disease
rendered him sterile.
