Do you know how you are related to your food? Plants and animals make up

the food that you eat. This makes you related to these plants and animals. Living
things feed off each other. Their relationship with each other is called a food
chain. A food chain shows how each living thing gets its food. A food chain always

starts with plants. They are at the bottom of the food chain. That is because they

don’t feed off other living things. They are the only living things that can produce
their own food. That is why they are called producers. Plants are eaten by
animals. Some animals eat only plants. These animals are called herbivores.

Zebras and giraffes are examples of herbivores. There are animals that have to

eat meat, so they eat other animals. Examples of these are lions, snakes, and
whales. They are called carnivores. There are animals that eat both plants and
other animals. These animals are called omnivores. People are omnivores

because we can eat meat and vegetables.

There cannot be too many links in a single food chain. It is because there are
several food chains. More often than not, animals are parts of many food chains.
This makes these food chains connected to each other. Food chains that are

connected to each other form a food web. Food chains and food webs show us

why we need other living things to survive. Links in a food chain can get lost.
When that happens, consumers on top of the food chain will have less food. It is
also possible that they will have nothing to eat at all.
