Penguins are one of the toughest animals on the planet. They live in the South
Pole, the coldest and the harshest place on Earth. Penguins cannot fly and they
live in the ocean. It is not known how many penguins are still living today. The
largest species are the Emperor Penguins, which are less than 4 feet tall and
weigh 35 kilograms. The smallest species are the Little Blue Penguins, which are
about one foot tall and weigh only 1 kilogram. Scientists say that some
prehistoric penguins were as tall as humans!
Penguins eat fish, squid and krill, which they find under the sea. Penguins,
however, are prey to leopard seals, so penguins avoid them. Generally, penguins
are friendly to humans they encounter.
Penguin parents help each other in caring for their young. Once the egg is
born, the male penguin stays with the egg to keep it warm while the female goes
to the sea to find food. The female penguin brings home the food in time for the
egg to hatch. When the female comes back, it’s the male penguin’s turn to go to
the sea to find food.
