By night, before the compass

      was invented, early seamen

      tracked their coordinates using

      the stars as their guide.

By day they used the sun, the

      wind and a system of

      dead-men’s reckoning.

      Dead reckoning was simply

      a process of estimating how

far they had sailed each hour

      or day.
