Sometimes, the Sun comes out while there are drops of rain in the air. When
this happens, look out of your window. You will most likely see different colors
across the sky. These colors form a curve or a bow. This group of colors is called
a rainbow. A rainbow is actually light from the Sun. The Sun’s light is made up of
colors. When these colors are together, they look white. When the Sun’s light
passes through water, the colors become visible. This is because water can
separate the colors of the Sun’s light. This is called refraction. When these colors
are reflected back out of the drops of rain, a rainbow is formed. That is why we
see the colors out in the sky. The colors of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow,
green, blue, indigo, and violet. They appear in order. Red is always seen on top
of all the colors. Violet is always at the bottom. We do not only see the rainbow
through the drops of rain. Water in other forms can also cause rainbows to
appear.
Rainbows can be caused by mist, dew, fog, and ice. Sometimes, a second
rainbow is seen outside the first rainbow. This is very rare . This only happens
when the Sun’s light reflects two times inside the drops of rain. When the Sun’s
light reflects twice, we see two rainbows. However, the colors of the second
rainbow appear in a different order. The color red is seen at the bottom. The
beauty of a rainbow has always amazed people. They have taken many
photographs of it. Rainbows also appear in many paintings.
