Before butterflies are butterflies, they are caterpillars. Caterpillars like to stay in
the grass and eat leaves. They look like worms. They often have stripes or
patches on their skin. As they grow, they shed their skin, enclosing their growing
body. Then the caterpillar slowly develops into an adult insect. Its color changes
from brown to green, blending well into its background . Later on, it becomes
colorful again, becoming a butterfly. The butterfly moves around more, looking for
mates. Butterflies have a head, a thorax, an abdomen, two antennae, and six
legs. They can be found everywhere around the world. There are as many as
15,000 known species of butterflies. There may be thousands more yet to be
discovered.
Butterflies can usually be found during the summer or warmer months. You can
see them in national parks and other places in the wild. Some plants are planted
to attract butterflies. Some people catch caterpillars to see how they turn into
butterflies. Butterflies have wings that are very thin with tiny scales that make
them colorful. Their wings have to be strong enough to support their body and to
help them fly. Their wings are colorful for a reason. Sometimes they are used for
courtship and to protect themselves from harm or predators.
