Midshipman’s hitch
Here’s an old friend in a new guise: the rolling
hitch tied onto its standing part to create a loop. The
hitch can then slide up and down the line to adjust
the loop, and be tightened once it’s the right size.
Recommended on land for tent guys and the like,
while at sea it can be usefully employed on awning
lines, where there is liable to be some stretch.
1 Take a turn around the mooring point, if appropriate, or put a bight in
the end of the line.
