Crown whipping
Another whipping that can double up as a rail
wrap (although the initial hitch will need to be
adapted), this whipping uses the crown splice as its
starting point. The turns are then simply repeated
until you end up with three neat ridges, following the
lay of the rope. This is a secure and attractive knot,
which does have a tendency to bulk up.
1 Tie a piece of twine to the middle of another piece of twine twice its
length. Place the three ‘arms’ in the centre of the line, as shown.
