           Introduction to Elements and 850 9-12 1 .5 Principles of Design
        This semester course is centered on the development of an understanding of the principles of design and the elements of art. Fundamental skills in pencil, watercolor, charcoal, tempera, pen and ink, pastels, acrylics and various materials are emphasized. A variety of three-dimensional materials are used to increase interest, to develop skills and to stimulate creative thinking.

        Covering art appreciation and the beginning of art history, this course encourages students to gain an understanding and appreciation of art in their everyday lives. Presented in an engaging format, Intro to Art provides an overview of many introductory themes: the definition of art, the cultural purpose of art, visual elements of art, terminology and principles of design, and two- and three-dimensional media and techniques. Tracing the history of art, high school students enrolled in the course also explore the following time periods and places: prehistoric art, art in ancient civilizations, and world art before 1400.

        Introducing art within historical, social, geographical, political, and religious contexts for understanding art and architecture through the ages, this course offers high school students an in-depth overview of art throughout history, with lessons organized by chronological and historical order and world regions. Students enrolled in this course cover topics including early medieval and Romanesque art; art in the twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth centuries; fifteenth-century art in Europe; sixteenth-century art in Italy; the master artists; High Renaissance and baroque art; world art, which includes the art of Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific cultures; eighteenth-and nineteenth-century art in Europe and the Americas; and modern art in Europe and the Americas.
       Fundamentals of Drawing 855 9-12 1 .5
        This semester course introduces students to classical and contemporary drawing techniques and concepts, with emphasis on the understanding of its formal language and the fundamentals of artistic expression. Students will develop observational abilities and rendering skills in this introduction to the fine art of drawing. Students will be introduced to methods of describing objects in terms of line, value, shape and texture. Course assignments help to explore the principles of light, space, composition, and perspective using a variety of drawing media and techniques. PREREQUISITE: Student must have all of the following:

        Fundamentals of Drawing II 838 10-12 1 .5
        This semester course is designed to enhance and expand the classical and contemporary drawing techniques learned in Fundamentals of Drawing. Advanced drawing techniques such as stippling, hatching, cross-hatching, and scumbling will be incorporated into a variety of multimedia projects including pen & ink, charcoal, and pastels. Using advanced drawing skills and techniques to make an ordinary drawing appear three dimensional is the goal. Students should take this course before proceeding to Art IV or A.P. Art unless advised by an art teacher.
