College Bound (and Gagged)
So, you want to go to college, do you? Well then, grab your properly sharpened No. 2 pencil (make sure to have a spare), and then answer the following:
1. What comes after 2, 4, 6, 8 ?
Answer: If you wrote, “10,” you’re on your way to college. (However, if you wrote, “Who do we appreciate?” you’re on your way to a school in the Southeast Conference—Ole Miss, for instance.)
2. What comes after 7, 14, 21, 28 ?
Answer: If you wrote “35,” you’re getting the point and might be able to go to a school that is not in the SEC.
3. What comes after 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13?
Answer: If you wrote “21,” you’re possibly headed to MIT because you knew that it is the next number in the Fibonacci sequence.
4. What comes after 14, 23, 28, 34 ?
Answer: If you wrote “42,” then you might be headed for Harvard because you figured out that you were looking at the series of numbered stops on the IRT Lexington Avenue line. On the other hand, perhaps you should be going to Hunter.
5. “Hot” is to “cold” as “tall” is to _____________ ? Answer: “Short”—you are still on track.
6. “War” is to “peace” as “pride” is to _____________ ?
Answer: “Prejudice”—excellent, you are a reader. May we suggest the Ivy League? Kenyon College?
7. Use “abase” in a sentence.
