Chapter Twenty-Three
Portrait of a (First) Marriage
MARCH 15, 1969 – JANUARY 29, 1983, AND FOLLOWING
Wherein our author actually takes leave of his life as a litigator and attempts to describe the other, human, half of his life, which, unlike the office, did involve some trying experiences.
Turning Point
And that takes us out of the professional world and brings us back to the personal. (One preliminary note: As we move forward, you will find that this book will tend to center on my professional life in one chapter, and then on my personal, “private” life in the next. But life is not sequenced the way a book might tend to make it seem. This chapter covers approx- imately sixteen years “at home,” whereas Chapter Twenty-Two, which dealt with my three years plus in the Litigation Department, overlapped with the beginning of that period, and Chapter Twenty-Five, which deals with my first time around in Rosenman’s Real Estate Department, will more than overlap with the rest of it. But it was all happening at the same time. And the two worlds influenced each other—sometimes pos- itively, sometimes not.)
We did indeed have a family, a beautiful one. Danny arrived on November 16, 1970, Peter joined us on April 19, 1974, and Rachel made us complete on October 11, 1978.
