least at the table), nobody fought, and nobody would dream of having the TV or the stereo on during mealtime. She had some way of telling me that her family really liked me, and that was that. (I later found out that Steve hadn’t known what to make of me at the time.)
And then, of course, we bought our wedding rings: mine, a simple gold band, and Kathy’s, a gold band with five diamonds, one for each of the children. December 3 rolled around, and there we were for a beauti- ful ceremony, drooping chuppah and all, and a wonderful celebratory luncheon. This was followed in short order by our honeymoon at Jumby Bay in Anguilla, which is still the most upscale place that we ever went to in the Caribbean. We could have had the entire family for dinner in the shower.
But could we find a house that was big enough? Kathy and I had looked for a suitable house for months, before and after the wedding. The unattainable goal was, for obvious reasons, four bedrooms of equal size for Kathy’s kids and mine (when they visited). It was a frustrating and arduous process because, despite the number of homes in Scarsdale that were on the market, none really matched up with our requirements. And, even if we had to be flexible when it came to layout, the house had to be within our price range.

The four bedrooms for the children were not equivalent, but that didn’t matter, because the asking price was well outside of our range, even if we were able to negotiate a sizable discount. I can’t even recall how we came to view it in the first place.
And then, magic! It sounds incredible, but many months and many houses after we first saw 16 Church Lane South, we both woke up and
