The BEI oversees our BWH archives services. Catherine Pate, an archivist from The Center for the History of Medicine in the Countway Library of Medicine, is the custodian for the historical archives belonging to BWH. The BWH Archives collects and preserves noteworthy records, spanning more than 180 years of BWH hospital history, and includes historic photographs, annual reports, administrative correspondence, building specifications, artifacts and memora- bilia, training program and fundraising records, and serial and stand-alone publications.

The iron lung was first used at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1929, and became an important tool for the care of sufferers of paralytic polio. The BEI showcased the original Iron Lung and Pulmonary Archive Display in the BEI Knowledge Center.
The development and use of Anesthesia in medicine has a long history at BWH. Our “Painless” exhibit in the BEI Knowledge center presented artifacts from the earliest days of ether in the 1840s up through the present — including a 2018, state-of-the-art anesthesia workstation, courtesy of General Electric Healthcare.
The BEI’s latest exhibit displays BWH’s Department of Nursing’s rich history of excellence. The exhibit showcases a rich history of dedication to promoting healing to our patients, families, and our community.
