Innovating Medical & Health Professions Education in the Age of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated swift and immediate transition of many clinical and educational services throughout the BWH to the virtual environment. Focusing on collaboration, the BEI developed a number of resources to help our community. We launched our Virtual Education in the Age of COVID-19 Series, offering educators opportunities to build their online teaching confidence, better engage virtual audiences, and providing multiple lessons learned from educators at the front lines of virtual teaching. We also developed a document to provide faculty, staff, and trainees with standards for Zoom etiquette.
EXPERIENCES OF FACULTY AND LEARNERS DURING THE RAPID CONVERSION FROM IN-PERSON TO INTERACTIVE VIDEO-BASED CLINICAL EDUCATION
Our team of faculty educators studied the shift from in-person to interactive video-based clinical education, to understand how an educational community adapts to maintain its clinical skills mission under such circumstances. We performed a constructivist grounded theory at our academic medical center, using semi-structured Zoom interviews with teachers and learners throughout the medical training continuum, approximately 8 weeks following disruptive change. We conclude that while disruptively introduced, interactive video-based clinical education is successful and can be sustained. These findings provide insight into an educational community’s adaptations, identifying barriers and facilitators while describing value-added propositions likely sustained into the future.
Developing Best Practices and Effective Processes for Virtual Care and Learning
At the request of MGB virtual care leaders and working closely with BH information services and medical and health professions education leaders within our community, the BEI created a forum to collect, refine, and disseminate best practices and effective processes for continued excellence when providing virtual care. The BEI leads a monthly meeting of experts within our system to curate resources, which will be distributed through our "Best Practices" website. The BEI has also created a forum where clinical educators across the MGB system can collaborate and obtain real time support.
Innovations in Rapid Curation and Dissemination of COVID-19 Knowledge to Clinicians at BWH and Beyond
The BEI has played key roles in supporting the COVIDProtocols editorial process, as well as developing innovations to conduct rapid systemat- ic COVID-19 literature reviews. This is one of the most widely used clinical resources for COVID-19 by providers within our institution, and at the request of USAID, is being adapted to support clinicians in global health settings.
