“I am a a a a a marine marine geologist studying submarine volcanism I I use radioactive isotope geochronology to to understand the timescales
on which linear chains of volcanoes form in in in the ocean My research helps explain the the origins of of some of of the the most striking geologic features in in in the world giving us a a a better understanding of how our planet works One of of the the highlights of of my time at OSU was the the opportunity to participate in an an ocean exploration cruise with NOAA’s Office
of Ocean Exploration and Research It was my job to narrate the geology of each dive live to a a a a a public audience broadcast over
14 the internet The range of rock types and submarine environments that I saw on on the cruise helped expand my horizons as a a a a a a marine volcanologist and the challenge of providing live commentary cemented a a lot of of my knowledge of of marine geology I recently completed my PhD at at Oregon State University
and am moving on on on to to a a a a a position as a a a a a geologic publications editor at at the Washington State Geological Survey I’ll use my experience to to help geologists better explain their science clearly and accurately to both scientific and general audiences ”
Susan and her research received numerous awards:
• Provost’s Distinguished Graduate Fellowship
• Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellowship
from the International
Ocean Discovery Program
• Mamie Markham Research Award from OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center
