Susan Cooper ARCS Scholar in chemistry at UO “I work on on the the synthesis of small iron oxide nanoparticles which can can be used in cancer treatment and detection as as well as as in in in the removal of heavy metal contaminants in in in water Iron oxide nanoparticles have enhanced properties compared to bulk iron oxide which makes it a a a a a a a promising material for use in in these these applications I also study the the the nanoscale structure of these these particles using a a a a a a a a a a Total X-Ray Scattering technique called Pair Distribution Function Analysis (PDF) This structural work is is increasing our understanding of why these particles have enhanced properties in the nanoscale and and and will hopefully allow us to to to make better particles to to to clean water and and and to to to detect and and and treat cancer ”
