William Bryce Penta
The Silver Endowed Scholar
Oregon State University, Department of Microbiology
Bryce is interested in marine phytoplankton physiology and how we observe these microscopic plants from space with satellites. Phytoplankton feed the entire ocean and Bryce studies how these critical organisms respond to environmental shifts. He aims to resolve discrepancies between remotely-sensed estimates and environmental measurements of their carbon production by incorporating higher physiological detail. In his spare time, Bryce enjoys long distance running, hiking, and spending time with his family’s dogs.

Alexandra Quackenbush
The OHSU ARCS Scholar
Oregon Health & Science University, Program in Molecular and
Cellular Biosciences
Alex studies the unique liver environment in the postpartum host and how this environment promotes breast cancer liver metastasis. She hopes to identify mechanisms of metastatic promotion that could be therapeutically targeted in young women at elevated risk for breast cancer liver metastases. Outside

Amber Rolland
The ARCS Foundation Oregon Chapter Scholar
University of Oregon,
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Amber utilizes native electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and complementary techniques to investigate the composition and lipid dependence of pore-forming toxins. Her research goal is to understand how pore- forming activity is affected by different lipid environments and pore structures, which will contribute new knowledge toward engineering proteins for therapeutic uses such
as drug delivery and constructing immunotoxins to target cancer cells. Outside the lab, Amber enjoys hiking in national parks, nature photography, baking, and gardening.
