Jennifer Ventrella
The Precision Castparts Scholar
Oregon State University,
Colleges of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Anthropology
Jen is developing and testing a wireless sensor-based platform to measure the adoption and impacts of biomass (e.g. wood) cookstoves in low-income regions. Currently, 40% of the world’s population cooks over inefficient open fires that are harmful to human health and the environment. To reduce deforestation and harmful smoke, engineers have designed cookstoves with improved efficiency. Sensor-based monitoring is essential to accurately understand and ensure the impacts of improved cookstoves on human health and the environment. Outside of research, Jen likes playing guitar, hiking, and eating food.

Sophia Wensman
The Ogg/OSU/ARCS Foundation Oregon University Matched Endowment Scholar
Oregon State University, College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences
Sophia seeks to provide an alternative method of measuring ocean acidification using the chemical composition of oyster shells. Ocean acidification is detrimental to coastal ecosystem health. The use of oysters as a biomonitor of corrosivity may help improve our ability to grow oysters in these environments and help us understand its effects on understudied coastal areas. Sophia enjoys mountain biking, running, and camping when not in the lab or field.
