Endowment Scholar
Oregon Health & Science University, Behavioral Neuroscience
Sydney is interested in studying neurodegenerative diseases – like Parkinson’s disease – and exploring new treatments. She uses mice that have Parkinson-like pathology to test disease progression and interventions in hopes of finding a cure for mouse Parkinson’s – an important early step before progressing into human clinical trials for treatment of any disease. When not watching mice, Sydney likes to run with her husband and dog, explore new breweries with friends, and

Michael Crawford
ARCS Foundation Oregon Chapter Scholar
University of Oregon,
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Michael researches how molecules behave after
they absorb light. Michael is focused on molecular “nanohoops,” which have unique geometry resulting
in interesting properties after they absorb light. He measures the transmission of short laser pulses through a sample of these nanohoops to note how they behave after absorbing light. This will help determine how synthetic chemists should design nanohoops for solar cells or other electronic devices. Michael enjoys cooking and playing strategy games.

Jenny Firkins
The Giesy/Pedersen Scholar Award Scholar
Oregon Health & Science University, School of Nursing
Jenny’s research interest is the usage and access of palliative care. She explores nurse and physician’s attitudes towards palliative care in the United States, identifying barriers to palliative care. She surveys nurses in Oregon regarding their views and experiences with palliative care. In her free time, Jenny enjoys growing things
