Potential Barrier Identification
When asked to identify potential barriers that would keep ARCS Oregon Chapter from transitioning to a ‘hybrid’ organization, respondents offered these key themes:
• Acceptance of change
o Though having a paid professional staff is widely supported, how easily will members
relinquish tasks in the staff’s purview?
o How will volunteers view their place in the Chapter as this transition takes place? Will
they still feel valued?
o With the streamlining of processes and centralization of information, how will
committee members move beyond ‘we-have-always-done-it-this-way’?
• Moving from ‘operations’ to ‘strategy’
o The board has, since the 2004 creation of the Chapter, handled all operations of the
Chapter. How easy will it be for the board to shift its focus from operational to strategic
thinking?
• Lack of patience during transition
o Howtoavoidaskingstafftodomorethancanbeaccommodated
• Cultural shift: from everyone doing everything to a more professional orientation
o Howtomaintainproductivitywhileretainingcollegialatmosphereoncommittees
