“I am in the Cardiopulmonary and Respiratory Lab in the Human Physiology Department at
the University of Oregon. In my lab we study
the influence of various environmental stressors, specifically heat and altitude, on cardiopulmonary and respiratory health and function. Our lab
is currently studying the influence of a patent foramen ovale, a small hole between the upper chambers of the heart, on the incidence of acute mountain sickness, which can occur when individuals rapidly ascend to altitude.
ARCS has made a significant impact on my graduate studies. The ARCS financial support has given me the flexibility to spend more
time in the lab working on my research. More importantly, ARCS provides scholars with an incredible support system. This was especially important for me moving from the East coast to start my PhD program during the pandemic.
I have been lucky to have mentors who believe that women have an important role in the sciences and who have advocated to help me advance both my career and education in physiology. I am thankful for the female scientists who have paved the way for me, and I hope
to be that role model and advocate for future generations of female scientists.”
