SCHOLAR RELATIONS COMMITTEE
Co-VPs Scholar Relations: Diana Gordon & Kathie Lasater
Committee:
Scholar Picnic – The SRC developed several “in lieu of” events to stand in for the annual Scholar Picnic, which was cancelled due to the pandemic: (1) We sent each scholar a hand-written note along with a $10 coffee card; (2) We developed a “Scholar Appreciation Week,” which was implemented during the week of October 4, 2021 and included the opportunity for scholars and members to interact via email and social media. Scholars were encouraged to complete a variety of other activities, earning entry into a drawing (for a pair of noise-cancelling headphones) for each event they participated in. Feedback from both scholars and members was positive!
Orientations for 1st Year Scholars – This event was held virtually on October 13, 2021, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. and was attended by all First Year Scholars. Chapter President Anne Jarvis welcomed the group and shared the ARCS Video. Representatives from each of our three partner universities were on hand to greet students and offer words of encouragement. OHSU ARCS Liaison Allison Fryer, PhD, discussed how ARCS Scholars are selected and the prestige associated with that selection; ARCS Scholar Alum Gretchen Engbring, PhD, shared her experience as a scholar and encouraged the scholars to take advantage of the resources available to them through ARCS. The event was divided into a plenary session that was followed by breakout sessions for students from each university hosted by Phil Mote (OSU), Hal Sadofsky (UO), and Allison Fryer and Monica Hinds (OHSU).
SAL Third-Year Poster Session – Because the SAL was virtual this year, there was no poster session.
Pizza Parties – Pizza Parties were hosted in Portland on April 5 (5-8 p.m.) at the home of Anne Yoo, attended by 34 scholars, spouses, members, and Corvallis on April 11 (5-8 p.m.) at the home of Lisa Weller, attended by 40 scholars, spouses, members.
Lab Tours – A virtual lab tour event was hosted by OSU in conjunction with the Virtual Site Visit to OSU’s College of Engineering on Wednesday, March 2. Dean Scott Ashford welcomed our group, and we were treated to virtual tours led by 4 Scholars: Kayla Clements (Advisor Todd Palmer); Nate Gardner (Advisor David Blunk); Julie Liu (Advisor Erica Fisher); and Stephen Kristy (Advisor Kostas Goulas). Following the tours, the scholars sat on a virtual panel. Many thanks to Dr. Glencora Borradaile for organizing this event!
Celebrate the Third-Year Scholars – Separate events were held in Portland on May 11 (6-8 p.m. at the home of Ann Emerson) and in Corvallis on May 18 (6-8 p.m. at the home of Lisa Weller). Third-Year Scholars from all three universities were in attendance along with ARCS members and Donors. Kathie Lasater, Elizabeth Bell, and Adrianne Peterson coordinated and completed the orderingandwrappingofcongratulatoryplaquesforthescholarsbeforetheevent. Eachscholar was asked to speak briefly (1-2 minutes) on the future impact their research would have.
