ARCS FOUNDATION NATIONAL
The primary purpose of ARCS Foundation National is to support the work of the 15 chapters across the United States and maintain national standards of excellence with our scholars and universities as well as adherence to our mission.
The Oregon Chapter is well-represented at the ARCS National level in 2021-2022:
• Caron Ogg served as ARCS National President, Chair of the Executive Committee, Co-
Chair Evaluation Committee, and member of the Information Strategies Committee
• Aletha Anderson served on the National Board as the Chair Communications and
Marketing, and chaired the Editorial Committee
• Joan Foley served on the National Board as the Co-Chair University Relations
• Julie Branford served on the National Board as a Representative of the Council of
Presidents, and chaired the Governance Committee
• Anne Jarvis served as a member of the Council of Presidents and the Long-Range
Planning Committee
• Jean Josephson and Susan Smith served on the Council of Advisors
• Meri Taylor and Leslie Workman served on the Communications and Marketing
Committee
• Jamie Anderson served on the Information Strategies Committee
Caron appreciates these women who have stepped up to help make her term as President a success.
As National President, Caron established goals and set forth several initiatives:
• DEI Action Plan Task Force – To give credence to National’s DEI statement, the task
force examined how a DEI action plan could be imbedded into the organization and governance structure of ARCS Foundation, Inc. The task force gathered input from members and scholars through surveys, and National conducted its very first Town Hall series to encourage an open discussion with members. A Town Hall for scholars is being planned. Recommendations with a DEI focus on membership, scholars, university partners, and funders will be presented to the National Board in June. ARCS chapters are encouraged to implement these recommendations into their chapters.
• SEAC (Science Engineering Advisory Council) Evaluation Task Force – National disbanded its external advisory council and a task force was charged to review if an external advisory council would be beneficial. The task force will present recommendations for improvement at the June Board Meeting.
• Caron implemented a SWOT Analysis exercise where the entire organization examined the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of ARCS Foundation in preparation for developing the new Long Range Plan beginning July 1, 2023. This is the first time the entire organization has been asked to participate in this process.
• Many university partners across the country are questioning the U.S. citizenship restriction for ARCS funding. Universities are asking ARCS Chapters to draft scholar award criteria to include “U.S. citizens and permanent residents.” National will spend time researching this issue.
ARCS National is here to support the success of each chapter, strive to enrich experiences for members, and educate members about pressing issues.
