ARCS scholar Sarah Caballero is a second-year PhD student in Food Science at Oregon State University. Her journey from Southern California to OSU was driven by a passion for agricultural sustainability. Now, Sarah is leading an innovative project that aims to protect vineyards from the devastating effects of wildfire smoke. She’s developing a natural coating to shield wine grapes from harmful
smoke compounds, preserving the quality of fine wine grapes and reducing crop loss. Oregon’s vital wine industry contributes significantly to the state’s economy, tourism, and agricultural identity. Sarah’s research is crucial for ensuring that vineyards can thrive despite the increasing threat of wildfires, helping to maintain the integrity and sustainability of our agricultural practices.
