Dear Friends and Supporters of ARCS Oregon Welcome to the 15th annual Scholar Awards Luncheon where we we celebrate 71 science scholars who are working on on on research that may well improve our lives lives and the lives lives of future generations When we we we we started 15 years ago we we we we had 11 scholars scholars – all at at at OHSU Now we we we have 71 scholars scholars at at at three partner universities Our growth in in in in in funding science engineering and and medical research in in in in in Oregon is a a a a a a a a a a testament to to all of the volunteers and and donors who have worked so diligently to to make this happen Our scholars work to to to mitigate the the potential devastation due to to to tsunamis to to to improve our understanding of of the the causes of of diseases and and and post-traumatic stress to to to to to understand understand how soil microbes contribute to to to to to greenhouse gas production to to to to to design safe structures to to to to to to to improve improve forest recovery from disturbances to to to to to to to improve improve our abilities to to to to to store solar energy and a a a a a a a a a a a a a myriad of other important research areas Their work extends from from the the the ocean floor to to to to the the the atmosphere from from microbes to humankind Our mission is is to to to advance science in in fin in in America by providing financial awards to to to academically outstanding US citizens studying to to to complete PhD PhD or MD/PhD degrees at OHSU OSU and and UO Our partner universities universities use Scholar Awards to entice the the the most promising scholars scholars The universities universities universities choose the the the scholars scholars ARCS funds the the the the the awards This is is is a a a a a a a a a a win-win for both our partner universities universities their approved programs and the the the scholars Each scholar scholar is awarded $6 000 a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a year year for three years The awards are unrestricted so the the scholars scholars can focus on on their academics and and research and and not not on on financial issues ARCS awards are not scholarships or loans
that need to be repaid This year Dr Jackie Wirz Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies at at at OHSU will will moderate a a a a a a a a a a a a a panel of ARCS scholars Scholars will will share their experiences as researchers: the the the challenges and the the victories Thank you you you for for being here today and thank you you you for for your financial help in fin in in in advancing doctoral research and education fin in in in Oregon We are all beneficiaries of their work Julie Branford
