Introductions and JSF overview
We began the meeting with introductions and Bobby Krause provided a description of the mission of the JSF. He followed with a few comments about why we were visiting UNCP. Unfortunately, the Chancellor who is one of the very few American Indians leading a mainstream institution was not available. We were given a quick tour of the very impressive brand new $12 million Business building. It had 6 or more special configurations for large classroom instruction. In addition, it had a special classroom for the financial investing coursework that had a complete “Wall Street” ticker display across the top of the room.
Robeson County is the poorest county in the state and has a high percentage of American Indians in the county. About 20 % of the students live on campus and that is expected to increase next year when the university implements a sophomore residency requirement. UNCP is a center of education, arts and culture for southeastern North Carolina.
Accreditation
UNCP is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate and master’s degrees. UNCP’s School of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) a distinction held by only 5% of business schools.
Entrepreneur Hub
UNCP has an entrepreneur business hub located in town. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit the hub.
Tuition
UNCP has a very unique tuition program called the North Carolina Promise Tuition Plan. “NC Promise” offers a tuition buy-down for all undergraduate students. The plan allows in-state students pay only $500 for tuition for each semester. Out of state students will only pay $2500 per semester to attend the university. The annual average cost of attendance beyond tuition is approximately $15,450 per year.
Student Profile
UNCP has almost 800 American Indian students or approximately 13% of all students. There are over 30 different tribes represented in the American Indian student population. They have 7 American Indian student organizations including the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Business and Administration Management is one of their top undergraduate programs for American Indian Students. They have 54 American Indian students majoring in Business Administration and Management.
