The requested grant would support the expansion of all 3 programs by raising awareness of, and accessibility to, the programs; identifying, developing and distributing additional supplemental teaching/learning resources for them; extending the advisory committees; and enhancing the current impact assessments and evaluation processes.
A question arose about whether other organizations are providing this type of education. In the U.S., for instance, organizations like Junior Achievement have been doing this for decades. Carlana responded that MFI has worked with Cape Breton University on a non-credit version of the program. MFI also tried working with Junior Achievement to no avail. Many students tell MFI they come to school because of AYEP.
Another question was about how MFI plans to track outcomes, especially among adults. MFI is asking other organizations how they do this. Many of them say offering rewards can help. Carlana hopes the mobile app that is being developed will be helpful in that regard. After their presentation, Chloe, Jessica and Carlana left the meeting.
Discussion focused on the great need for this program. These courses are available in a limited number of high schools. One thing JSF could do is connect MFI with organizations in the U.S. that are doing this type of work successfully. One example is the 7 Generation Money Management game that Levi Esquerra and his team created through NAU.
The Committee approved the application as presented from MFI requesting CDN $1,200,000 over 4 years in support of 3 business-centered programs.
