opportunities like applying for programs like this one, or dual enrolled with Valencia College. She's almost done with her bachelor's, but one things for sure, she will always be my role model. My 2 brothers, my parents, and sisters have set an amazing model for me. In turn, I believe I have to be the one setting the example for my brothers as well. Auto Biography Excerpt:
I was born in Myanmar, located in Southeast Asia. When I was around 5 years old, my dad left to find employment. My three siblings and I have lived in Myanmar with my mom ever since. Raising four kids all on her own was difficult for my mom. Every single day, she’d cook for us, do chores, help us with homework, and taught us to be hard workers. I admire her strength, especially as I realize how very little help she had. These challenging experiences are what shaped my character.
In 2014, my dad had an opportunity to migrate to the United States. After about six anxious months, along with paperwork, blood testing, identification, and other security checks, the whole family was finally reunited with my dad in the USA. Moving from Myanmar to the United States was an unforgettable transition.
I was so excited to attend school here in America, but there was one problem, I did not know how to speak English. All I knew were the words yes and no. People at school would wave at me, so I would wave back. When my classmates spoke to me, because I didn’t understand, I would respond with a smile. Sometimes I would answer with a yes, but if they looked puzzled, I would quickly change my answer to no, and smile. I felt so out of place. That was definitely one of the most awkward times of my life.
I worked hard to overcome my language barrier. By the end of 8th grade, I became fluent in English. I also achieved many awards and certificates, including art awards, academic awards, and honor rolls. My parents were so proud of me. In a blink of an eye, I was a freshman at Edgewater High School. I started taking Advanced Placement classes, I met new friends, and I connected with amazing teachers. I was able to gain amazing leadership skills through JROTC. In my sophomore year, I moved further out of my comfort zone, when I became a Math tutor for students in the Education Magnet program.
