UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA REPORT (2)
Dr. Heather White, the Vice President for Student Life, herself a first-generation college graduate, spoke about the reality of self-doubt for first generation college students. But she said, the fact that they made it to this point proves their tenacity to rise above the doubt and achieve success. She said if there is anything they can learn from this experience, like she did, is to remember that they are enough and have what it takes to achieve success in their chosen career.
Two students spoke on behalf of the graduating scholars. Both are children of immigrants (Jamaica and Hungary) and are from South Florida. They spoke about the challenges they faced on their journey assimilating to the US and then educationally, to and through UF. They both credited MFOS staff and programming for creating a community that supported their engagement and success. They also talked about their appreciation for the rich experiences, and now, their view of the future because of their affiliation with the MFOS program.
The event concluded with each scholar taking both personal portrait pictures as well as individual pictures with President Emeritus Machen and Vice President White. Below is Jaciah’s picture with them.
