GONZAGA UNIVERSITY GRADUATION WEEKEND REPORT (2)
undergraduate and MBA-AIE students, the attendees included a few alumni, including Angelique; Cohort VIII graduate Brandon Haugen; and Cohort XI graduate Jordan Thompson. The luncheon was an informal drop-in event, and students were given T-shirts as a graduation gift.
The evening event was a dinner hosted by President McCulloh for commencement honorees and their families. Angelique was honored as the graduate commencement speaker, and former CIA Director and Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates was honored as the speaker for the law school commencement. Among the highlights of the evening was a blanketing ceremony for Angelique. Both Wendy and Bobby participated in this special honoring activity. Also in attendance was Dr. Ken Anderson, Dean of the School of Business Administration.

Before the next day’s commencement, the honorees gathered for photos in a private area of the McCarthey Athletic Center. One of Angelique’s former professors, Dr. Dan Stewart, was among several people who came to greet her before she joined the academic procession into the arena. Angelique’s guests included her family, close friends, several members of her team at Native Forward Scholars Fund, and the JSF representatives.
Soon after the ceremony began, President McCulloh offered some words of inspiration to the graduates. He told them they represent hope in a broken world. During the program, he conferred upon Angelique an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa. Angelique spoke to the graduates about her life story and about her grandfather, a boarding school survivor. She shared a few important life lessons, such as the importance of using your voice. She encouraged the graduates, and everyone in attendance, to get to know someone’s story. As she concluded, she received a standing ovation. After the ceremony, many of the graduates of Cohort XIV gathered for photos outside the arena.
