JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM HISTORY
Sharon gave a brief history of this program that started in 1992 with the stated purpose to assist undergraduate students with disabilities in all ten of the campuses within the State system. Now there are 12 universities in the system. Since inception, a designated staff person in the Division of Colleges and Universities (DCU) has been responsible for coordinating data and providing oversight for the Johnson Scholarship Program. Thanks to an actual statute in the laws of the State of Florida, the State has provided a 50% match for the funds Johnson Scholarship Fund grants for these scholarships.
As a response to several years that the State was not able to meet its match, JSF began offering matching funds for money that the 12 universities would secure for these scholarships. As of December 2022, the Johnson Scholarship Foundation has supported students with disabilities attending the 12 state universities to the tune of just
over $13.3 million.
