STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF FLORIDA ANNUAL MEETING REPORT (2) THE JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Kirsten Harvey
Kirsten Harvey reported that 584 scholarships were awarded this past year with 59 graduates. She announced that this year, in addition to the $57,500 in reoccurring
funds, the State is providing an additional $10,000 to this program.
JSF PROGRAMING AND CHALLENGE GRANTS
Bobby announced that all of the universities had met their challenge grant amounts this year, so the full $150,000 is being awarded. Additionally, he announced that the JSF Grant Program Committee had voted to again extend this offer of $150,000 to the universities for scholarships for the 2023/2024 academic year.
SCHOOL SHARING
University of South Florida
Last year they awarded about 60 scholarships. They have about 120 applications this year. They have a flyer (which Allison offered to share with everyone) to help advertise the availability of the scholarships, then they help students complete the application. The school was closed twice
this year for hurricanes which eliminated several formerly annual events. They are anxious to get back to having awards programs to honor the students.
University of North Florida
Rusty reported that last year was the most disappointing applicant pool. They really pushed this year, and this year is now the largest pool ever. UNF’s Access Academy, which received start up support from JSF, is now more sustainable and helping students with workshops on academic strategy, executive functioning and employment. UNF recently started working with the Florida Center for Students with Unique Abilities.
University of Florida
UF had a larger number of enrollees last year. They started a more formal publicizing program that includes more understanding of JSF and about philanthropy as a whole. They have been focusing on helping students with self-advocacy. Sabrina is looking forward to seeing the USF flyer.
University of Central Florida
They have been working on promoting the availability of the scholarships. Missy feels that they are still trying to find their footing post COVID. They are trying to work more with the Career Services office. There has been some restructuring within the university. They are now under the Division of Equity and Inclusion.
New College
When Jennifer attended this meeting last year, she had only been on the job for 3 weeks. Since then she has started more outreach to students and being intentional about more individual contacts. They have 2 renewals from last year and 5 additional applications this year. Like many of the universities, this has been a stressful year, in addition to the impact of 2 hurricanes in the area.
Florida State University
Both of the FSU attendees are new to the JSF Program process and anxious to learn more at this meeting. They believe they currently have 10 renewals, 8 new applications and 8 applications for support during summer school. They, too, are looking forward to seeing the USF flyer.
