 TORONTO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY REPORT (5)
“I want to give back to my people. Whether that means I will be setting an example as a confident Indigenous voice in business or courthouse setting, landing myself a job with an indigenous corporation, or becoming an Indigenous business owner myself.”
Saije Catcheway
Law and Business, 2025
My name is Saije Catcheway, I play for the Varsity Women’s hockey team here at Toronto Metropolitan University. I identify as an indigenous person, specifically Ojibwe-Cree, treaty to Skownan First Nation, MB. I was born and raised in Winnipeg and attended an all-girls private school named Balmoral Hall where I graduated with honors.
I went on to continue my post-secondary education and hockey career at Adrian College in Michigan, USA, receiving a full academic and athletic scholarship before attending Toronto Metropolitan University. My journey to get to TMU was unexpected. I was set on pursuing my education and hockey at Adrian College. However, due to the pandemic, I was experiencing financial concerns in regards to tuition and affording hockey payments.
I took it upon myself to apply to TMU and when I was accepted, I didn’t think I would be good enough to play for the hockey team but I tried- out and ended up making it as a walk-on player! expect to use my business degree to its full potential. I’ve been diligent with researching to fully understand what I can do with my degree and where I can go with it.
Receiving the JSF Indigenous Student Excellence Award will allow me to not only have a comfortable living state but it will allow me to invest, propel my future career, and take initiative in actions I’ve always wanted to but haven’t been able due to finances. Thank you again for this gracious award, I will continue to use blessings like this as a way to inspire Indigenous youth and women.
