BOARD OF DIRECTORS MINUTES (3) D. Mission and Strategy Statements
There had been extensive discussion at the Grant Program Committee which concluded with a request for Malcolm and Bobby to provide a revised proposal that did not include the word “disadvantaged”.
The Board unanimously approved the Mission Statement “Our mission is to help people prepare for and obtain a college degree” and the Strategy Statement “JSF provides grants for scholarships and other support to nonprofit organizations that serve students with disabilities, students Indigenous to Canada and the United States, and students from low- income families.”
E. Governance & Nominating Committee scope
Bill explained that the Committee had discussed what the Committee’s role should be in the
succession/transition planning for the coming years.
The Board agreed that this is the appropriate body to address succession/transition planning.
F. December Planning Committee report
Pre-meeting materials included an update from the December Planning Committee. Lowell said that the survey will be going out in the coming weeks and stressed the importance of completing the survey as quickly as possible.
4. Board Chair’s Report
Malcolm reported that he continues to meet with Bobby on at least a monthly basis. He feels these have been productive meetings. He opined that the Foundation is working well under Bobby’s leadership as CEO.
Malcolm’s book is doing well. He has done a podcast, is doing some volunteering for Exponent Philanthropy and will be speaking at the Exponent Philanthropy Conference in November.
5. CEO’s Report
A written report was included in the pre-meeting materials.
Bobby said that two candidates have been identified for the Indigenous Consultant position. This position would be to focus on the Entrepreneurship Program with Rick continuing his work on the endowments. Rick has agreed to continue his work as an Indigenous Consultant until his replacement is secured.
Palm Beach Atlantic University produced three videos. Two are for their use with JSF Scholars to educate them on the source of their scholarships and to use as recruitment tools. The third was edited as a gift to the Foundation to use elsewhere. The video was shown. Bea expressed that this could be a great tool for our grantees, noting, in particular, the SUSF schools.
Maridel Moulton is hoping to attend part of the December activities remotely.
On behalf of himself and Susan, Bobby invited all of the Foundation family to their house for a casual dinner on Sunday night, December 8th. He will once again provide transportation to the house via his boat for a ride up the Intracoastal Waterway for those desiring the boat ride.
Bill asked if there were any particularly challenging issues and if there is any way the Directors could be of assistance. Bobby noted that there have been no direct results from the Discovery Project, although the consultants still feel it is worth the effort.
