General Summary
During the 2022-2023 academic year, State University System (SUS) institutions awarded 584 Theodore R. and Vivian M. Johnson Scholarships totaling over $1.2 million dollars to undergraduate students with disabilities. Scholars were able to receive funds due to the generosity of the Johnson Scholarship Foundation, which provided $690,000, and the generosity of the Florida legislature, which provided $277,500. These recipients represented all class levels. Individuals with emotional/psychological/psychiatric disabilities, learning/specific learning disabilities, and multiple disabilities represented over one-half of the Johnson Scholars in 2022-2023. Compared to the 2021- 2022 scholarship disbursement for fall and spring, $280,304.39 more funds were disbursed in 2022- 2023. In addition, as shown in Figure 1, the per-student allocation was higher, on average, for the 2022-2023 school year compared to 2021-2022. Finally, SUS institutions reported that 59 Johnson Scholars graduated with a baccalaureate degree in 2022.

Johnson Scholarship Awards for 2022-2023
Institutions award the Johnson Scholarship in the fall and spring semesters and, if funding is available, also in the summer. As shown in Table 1, in fall 2022, SUS institutions awarded Johnson Scholarships to 313 recipients; in spring 2023, 271 scholarships were awarded. In the spring of 2023, 23% of scholarship recipients were juniors, and 48% were seniors, comparable to the 25% of junior recipients and 45% of seniors in the fall of 2022. Table 2 also provides a breakout of Johnson Scholars by class level and institution for spring 2023.
