Demonstration: Alkali metals
All metals on the periodic table share similar properties.
When we look closer at the groups (columns) we see that the
elements of a group have even more properties that only
that group possess.
Alkali metals: These elements all have 1 electron in their
outer shell, this causes it to react very quickly with water to
make a metal hydroxide (a strong base) and hydrogen gas).
Demonstration: We carefully drop some Sodium into some
water. We will put some phenolphthalein in the water which
will turn pink when the reaction produces a metal hydroxide
Discussion: Explain why alkali metals react with water so
quickly
