Demonstration: Alkali metals








    All metals on the periodic table share similar properties.
    When we look closer at the groups (columns) we see that the


    elements of a group have even more properties that only

    that group possess.



    Alkali metals: These elements all have 1 electron in their

    outer shell, this causes it to react very quickly with water to

    make a metal hydroxide (a strong base) and hydrogen gas).



    Demonstration: We carefully drop some Sodium into some

    water. We will put some phenolphthalein in the water which

    will turn pink when the reaction produces a metal hydroxide



    Discussion: Explain why alkali metals react with water so

    quickly
