Atomic Structure





     • All matter is made of different combinations of atoms.



     • Atoms are the smallest unit of matter, nothing can be made of something

          smaller than atoms.



     • Atoms are made up of sub-atomic particles (electrons, protons and

          neutrons) and all follow the same structure shown in the diagram.

        •     One type of atom is called an element, the element shown

              in the diagram above is hydrogen (the smallest atom).




        •     There are over a hundred known elements; they have

              different properties due to the different numbers of sub-

              atomic particles.
