Meteorology
3.4.4 Local winds
Local winds are winds that occur in specific places due to local conditions.
3.4.4.1 Sea breeze
Imagine a summer day with calm weather. In the morning, the sun heats the
land.
Warm air will rise in the
middle of the land, creating a
so-called low thermal
pressure.
Air will be drawn from coastal
areas into the middle of the
land.
This is called a sea breeze.
3.4.4.2 Land breeze
In the evening, the opposite occurs.
The air over the land cools and sinks, creating thermal high pressure.
The air spreads out towards the coastal area, which is warmer due to the better
thermal conductivity of water.
This causes the air to rise over the
water, and cooler air is drawn
toward the coast. In higher
altitudes, the wind blows inland.
This is called a land breeze.
