Meteorology

Under the movement of air in the cloud, small hailstones are carried along.

They grow larger and become asymmetrical, and rotation occurs, causing them

to grow up to 6 cm in diameter.

3.9.5.3 Turbulence in connection with CB clouds

The greatest turbulence problems occur with CB clouds.

The CB cloud moves in the same direction as the wind at FL 100.

During the phase with heavy precipitation (the middle stage), large amounts of

air or downdrafts are pulled through the cloud. The descent rate is high—up to

                2500 ft/min.

A CB cloud can be felt

up to 10 NM away, so

                keep this distance

                from the cloud and be

                cautious during

                takeoff and landing if

                CB clouds are close to
                the airport.
