If, as shown in the picture here, errors occur
in the system, you are warned, and then you
have to resort to the backup instruments,
which are typically the old type of instruments
in our aircraft.
But as also in newer and larger aircraft can be
the case, the “IMU 2” system, which drives
the instruments for the “first officer”. “IMU 1” is the captain’s system.
So there is redundancy and safety built into the systems, and there is a warning
if errors are detected.
