In 2016 we decided to hire in KFC the kids from the orphan-
ages we were cooperating with at that time. We had implement-
ed a career guidance program in the orphanages: we met and
talked to the kids quite often, trying to provide them with the
basic skills that allow to survive in the severe world of the adults’
economics. The idea was the following: if we had already held
excursions in KFC restaurants, why not show them how the real
work looked like? To officially hire them, conducting a real inter-
view, following the full recruitment cycle. This would have been
a great experience for the future orphanage graduates.
We chose 3 restaurants and 9 teenagers, collected the docu-
ments, and then hired 3 persons in each restaurant and started
working. Unfortunately, the problems appeared quite quickly.
Everything went smoothly for the first 2 weeks, everyone was ex-
cited, but then the kids started having the questions like, “Why,
do we have to WORK here?” So, gradually our wards dropped
out. Except for one girl…
Vasilya worked with us for 1,5 years and would have contin-
ued, but after graduating the orphanage she went to college and
started allocating more time to her studies. She was a proactive
performer, could do anything except for the hazardous opera-
tions. She remained accountable for her job and received well-
earned bonuses! They caused shock: the girl could not believe
she had deserved them. She made many new friends in the res-
taurant, everybody tried to support her.
It was an excellent experience for Vasilya. The first salary was
spent on some trifle matters, but with her second salary the girl
started saving money. And after graduating and getting an ac-
cess to her bank account she had already learnt how to spend
money and how to earn it.
We are still keeping contact with Vasilya. Everything is fine
with her: she lives in Ufa with her relatives and has 1 year ahead
before graduating the college. I am very glad that KFC has helped
her to take the proper path in due time and that the girl has got
the future.
