products (meat, wool), environmentally friendly practices, maintenance of the rural fabric in the plains as well as in the mountains, employment - (salaried shepherd) in the summer pastures - and the landscape and natural heritage. Able to preserve the conditions of a balanced relationship with the natural environment, capable of satisfying requirements of all kinds - food, social, environmental, cultural, even spiritual - transhumant sheep farming, as the majority of shepherds have been doing for centuries, is clearly a most convincing model.
TOWARDS AN INSCRIPTION OF THE TRANSHUMANCE TO THE INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF HUMANITY
The transhumance was registered in June 2020 in the French inventory of intangible cultural heritage. It could be recognised as intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2023. With this classi cation, France, together with Spain, Romania and Albania, would join Italy, Greece and Austria, which have already obtained this inscription in December 2019. A plan to safeguard and promote transhumance, shared by all the stakeholders concerned, will make it possible to encourage the transmission of know-how, support the development of the practice, promote the products of transhumant herds, as well as the implementation of tools and actions for promotion, popularisation and mediation. n

Quali é souvent de relique du passé, l’élevage ovin transhumant de Provence et des Alpes possède au contraire de nombreux atouts à faire valoir. Basée depuis toujours sur les cycles naturels de l’herbe et l’exploitation des aptitudes naturelles des ovins, il rencontre dé- sormais les attentes de la société et des dernières lois d’orientation agricoles : produits naturels et de qualité (viande, laine), pratiques respectueuses de l’environnement, maintien du tissu rural en plaine comme en montagne, de l’emploi - (berger salarié) d’estive - du pa- trimoine paysager et naturel. Apte à préserver les conditions d’un rapport équilibré avec le milieu naturel, propre à satisfaire des exi- gences de tous ordres, alimentaire, social, environnemental, cultu- rel, voire spirituel, l’élevage ovin transhumant tel que la majorité des bergers le conduisent depuis des siècles, est à l’évidence un modèle des plus convaincants.
VERS UNE INSCRIPTION DE LA TRANSHUMANCE AU PATRIMOINE CULTUREL IMMATÉRIEL DE L’HUMANITÉ
La transhumance a été inscrite en juin 2020 à l’inventaire français du Patrimoine culturel immatériel. Elle pourrait être reconnue au patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité en 2023. Par ce clas- sement, la France associée à l’Espagne, la Roumanie ou encore l’Albanie, rejoindrait alors, l’Italie, la Grèce et l’Autriche, qui ont déjà obtenu cette inscription en décembre 2019. Un Plan de sauvegarde et de valorisation de la transhumance, partagé par l’ensemble des acteurs concernés, permettra de favoriser la transmission des sa- voir-faire, l’accompagnement de l’évolution de la pratique, la valori- sation des produits issus des troupeaux transhumants, ainsi que la mise en œuvre d’outils et d’actions de promotion, de vulgarisation et de médiation. n
