COMPLETE OUTCOMES FOR YOUR PROGRAM.
Despite the breadth and depth of offerings available in the Complete suite, initial momentum was slow, with neither the ATI or WCU team satisfied with the early progress. Faculty adoption lagged, which in turn diluted students' benefit of the available resources. ATI recommendations were adopted inconsistently and the program-wide approach remained fragmented. In 2013, the teams held a status meeting that acted as a watershed moment -- everyone agreed the approach had to change.
"It was very evident that we had not embraced the totality of the resources. We clearly had not engaged ATI in a manner to lead to our success," says Dr. Egbert. "We needed to take their recommendations not as just suggestions, but as best practices to implement. To me, that was the only way we would succeed."
Arte Libunao, university executive director, Campus Operations was among the WCU staff members tasked with that success. He believed more education for faculty and a more direct approach were needed.
"We didn't fully understand Complete and all we had access to," he says now. "Our approach was still fragmented. But after that meeting, it was 'pedal to the metal.'"
Steered by Libunao, the ATI and WCU team created a new strategic roadmap. The goal was clear -- systemic improvement and moving the needle on NCLEX pass rates, with an ultimate goal of 90-plus percent first time pass rates. Weekly accountability meetings with all campus leaders were implemented where, says Libunao, all reported out on student participation in using ATI tools, NCLEX first-time pass/fail rates, student and faculty engagement efforts and other key metrics. The meetings ensured momentum stayed strong, and over time, proactive faculty education generated more understanding about Complete and thus more faculty buy-in. This in turn improved student adoption of tools. ATI drew on its experience with other successful schools to offer recommendations they knew would be integral to WCU's success.
The school implemented strategies such as providing a monetary incentive to students to complete the Virtual-ATI online NCLEX review within a very specific timeframe. Students who had done so

greatly increased their chances of NCLEX success. ATI Pulse, a predictive modeling tool that identifies students who are at risk of NCLEX failure, was integrated more fully into the program. This ensured steps were taken to support the students with focused remediation for weak areas. Additionally, the school modified the way it used practice assessments, better enabling students to understand the rationale of the questions, discontinued repeat takes of proctored assessments to improve the predictive probability, and built up a cadre of faculty champions, among other strategies.
As the changes and recommendations were integrated, the key performance indicators of the nursing program began to trend in the right direction. Since 2013, the school has experienced year-over-year improvement in NCLEX first-time pass rates. Pass rates have increased from 62 percent in 2013 to 83 percent in 2015. Just as important, the pass rates are at parity with the California state average . For the period of 2013-2014, 19 percent of licensed BSN graduates in the state of California were from WCU. The reputation of the program as a strong nursing program option for students is growing.
"We had a challenge and the Complete partnership helped us achieve what we needed to achieve," says Dr. Nelson. "Thanks to ATI, and our dedicated faculty, we currently have aggregate NCLEX pass rates well over 80 percent.
“That's huge for a nursing school that provides access to students who meet a minimum GPA and admission test score rather than being ranked based on the highest GPA and admission test score, and there's no doubt it has enhanced our reputation."
“In sum, the value of the ATI-WCU partnership cannot be overestimated," adds WCU President William Clohan. "Our recent achievements are a direct result of the dedication of WCU staff and ATI associates to pull together in the same direction to improve the education, the performances, and ultimately the lives of WCU graduates. ATI’s willingness to be creative and address our specific needs is unique in my experience with vendors. We look forward to continuing that partnering relationship in the years ahead.”
