Our first dou-
ble weap-
on system we
teach is Espada
y daga known as
sword and dagger
or baston y daga
which is stick and
dagger. Espada y daga
is good transition after
one is familiar with Bas-
Ka and the student can
use the alive hand offen-
sively other than blocking
and checking. The daga or
knife is often held in the sec-
ondary weapon hand which
is alive hand and baston stays
with primary or strong weapon
hand.
The last weapon system we teach
is double sticks which is referred
to as doble baston. Double sticks is
our most advance system become the
students has become familiar with us-
ing the weapon with their weakside/
underside or the left hand and espada y
daga. My father once said, do you rather
go in gun fight with one gun or two guns?
Same with the baston, rather fight with one
stick or learn how to fight with two sticks.
The training with two sticks also transition
two double bolo’s.
Single stick, empty hands and double sticks were
three of our weapon systems I was able to share
in my Las Vegas seminar with Justin Cataldi. My
last seminar was focus on double sticks. Each of my
father’s students who later became guros or teach-
ers on their own would later focus on specific weapon set. One of my father’s most
senior students who brought double sticks to whole other level beyond me is master
Bayani “Jojo” Abueg, he is light years beyond me and try to put some of his principles
in my personal system. No matter how long you been training or head of your own
system, you can still learn something from others and this is trait that I admire from
Justin Cataldi and allowing me to share Babao-Arnis system with them.
