LIME ROCK PARK • THE EARLY YEARS 1955-1975
Cooper. Third overall was Fred Ashplant in the Wassermann-Lotus. First in Class FB was the Brabham-Alfa Romeo driven by Mal Starr. He had started badly and was in last place as the cars left the grid, but put in a determined performance, working his way back through the field to finished fourth overall.
Doug Given was making a name for himself, continuing his winning ways in the Triumph TR4 in the next race. After a close duel with Frank Baldwin’s Jaguar XK120 in the first five laps he settled into a solid but by no means secure first place, as right behind him, Gerry Sagerman had brought his TVR though the field and into contention, and he in turn, towing Russ MacGrotty’s Yenko Stinger along with him. Baldwin’s Jaguar had suffered a broken throttle linkage which was repaired but only allowed Baldwin to complete one extra lap before the end of the race. By the final laps Sagerman, MacGrotty, Al Alden and John Howe were in a bunch that closed up on Given, but the positions did not change as they crossed the finish line.
In the opinion of observers, the Sports Racing event was the best race on the program. After taking an early lead, and stretching it out, Ken Duclos looked to have won the race in his Cicada-Chevrolet. However it was not to be, as the car broke a timing chain and retired on the tenth lap, leaving John Meyer in a Cooper-Ford and Dave Fenton in an Elva-Porsche to battle it out. They circulated together wheel-to-wheel for the remaining laps, and as the two cars came off the hill for the final run down the front straight, Fenton held a small lead with Meyer closing rapidly on Fenton’s right side. As they crossed the line it looked like Meyer might have won by a fraction but observers in the announcer’s stand insisted it was a dead heat. It was only when the chief timer’s figures were released though, that the win was finally awarded to John Meyer.
Archie McNeill gave a fine driving display to win the Class EP race in his Morgan Plus 4, holding off the fast Lotus 7s driven by Ralph DeCiantis and Earle Sylvia. The first three cars took the checker less than one second apart. Fourth place went to Bob McArthur in his Morgan Plus 4 after an excursion into the undergrowth cost him third place.
Cars from Classes AP, BP, AS and BS took to the track for the final race of the day. Sam Posey, fresh from a win in the Watkins Glen 500 with co-driver Ray Caldwell, kept his Porsche 904 out in front for the fifteen laps, but was challenged throughout the race, first by Pruyn, then by Pulver, both driving Lotus Elans. Pruyn finally established second spot overall, first in Class BP, with Pulver taking third place ahead of a charging Jack Welch in a Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray. Peter Lake took Class AS honors in his Ford Mustang, and Dick O’Neill won Class BS in a Lotus Cortina.
