decided to confine themselves to cars only and produce in their original works.’ Meanwhile, he writes, what about approaching Kendall for the car?
The last letter from this correspondence – enclosing two copies of an address on agriculture that Ferguson had given in Washington – dates from 19 September 1944. ‘I think it would be best if we would leave our common ideas until we have the joy of meeting again,’ writes Ferguson. ‘Do have a talk with Freddie Richmond when you meet him. If we don’t do anything else together, then we surely can help to get the ground sport of motor racing going again, and that would be all to the good.’
Ferguson says that he was still keen for contact to be made with Denis Kendall, but otherwise this is a low-key letter, suggesting that he had rather given up hope of recruiting Kimber to either tractor-manufacturing in Britain or to his frankly pie-in-the- sky automotive project. It is hard not to imagine Cecil Kimber heaving a sigh of relief.
Ultimately, Harry Ferguson Research was created, and came up with this four-wheel-drive saloon, the Ferguson R4. It was a long way from Ferguson’s notion of a car for the farmer. (Vauxford)
