Perhaps the most notable feature was the uncanny lack of wind and engine noise at high speeds, making 70mph seem comparatively slow. It was this, more than anything else, that made one realise the possibilities of a 200mph cruising speed on special roads, as mentioned earlier in the paper. (Illustration 10)
The next slide will probably be something of a mystery to many of you. It is difficult to tell whether it is coming or going. It is interesting as showing a progressive yet conservative concern. The Ford company felt the public were not yet ready to accept the rear-engined streamlined car in any quantity and, it is understood, that it was from this experiment [that] the Lincoln Zephyr was produced. (Illustration 11)
All the cars shown in the previous six slides are reasonably well streamlined when considered in elevation but – with the possible exception of the Tatra – they all fall down badly in this respect when considered in plan.
