Ben Bowden joined the Rootes Group in 1925, later becoming the chief body designer for Humber in the late 1930s. Immediately following the end of the Second World War, he established one of the first independent design studios in Britain, offering industrial design services. Among his most famous creations is the Spacelander bicycle pictured here, which was shown at the ‘Britain Can Make It’ exposition in 1946. It is widely considered a landmark in transportation design. Among the other automobiles that Bowden worked on were the Ford Thunderbird and Chevrolet Corvette. (Simon Bilbie Collection)
