         MULTI-SENSORY ENVIRONMENT

Multi-Sensory (Snoezelen) is a Dutch concept developed in the 70’s by two Dutch Therapists and is a blend of two Dutch words
“snuffelen” (to seek out, to explore) and “doezelen” (to doze, to snooze). Multi-Sensory (Snoezelen) is a therapy consisting of
sensory experiences delivered to stimulate the primary senses with few demands placed on cognitive ability. Trust and relaxation
are encouraged via non-directive therapy. An advantage of Multi-Sensory (Snoezelen) therapy is that it does not rely on verbal
communication and is beneficial for those who would otherwise be almost impossible to reach.

What are the aims of multi-sensory (Snoezelen)? To offer individuals with special needs and challenging conditions the opportunity
to exercise choice through action. These safe, non-threatening environments bridge cognitive, perceptual, behavioral, and physical
impairments, as well as other limiting conditions to provide a sense of empowerment. Moreover, these environments allow clients
to enjoy a wide range of sensory experiences—either passively or actively—that enhance therapy, learning, and relaxation. Clients
choose the experiences that give them the most pleasure.
Multi-Sensory (Snoezelen) is not bound by a specific professional discipline, therapy, facility, or client profile. Rather, it is a
philosophy and a concept to be utilized as a resource to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and other limiting
         conditions.
