Risks and current scale of Technology Components
Renewable Power Generation
q Very low risk
q Renewable power technology, with focus on solar PV and onshore wind
power, has matured significantly over the last decade, with resulting
decrease in power generation costs
q There is still room for cost improvement however, which will benefit large
scale project developers in this sector, including closed loop green hydrogen projects
Electrolyzer Technology
q Low risk, but room for cost and scalability improvement
q Alkaline technology for hydrogen production is well established and
mature, and therefore presents relatively low risks
q PEM technology, which is likely to be the technology used in the longer
term for large green hydrogen production, still needs to mature in order to be deployed for large scale green hydrogen/ammonia production However, it is attracting significant investments globally from a number of technology providers
Haber Bosch Technology
q Haber Bosch technology is extremely mature and there are a number of well-established technology suppliers and EPC players
No. Technology Current Scale
Solar PV technology is mature with over 600 GWp of
1 Solar installed capacity by 2020, and prices comparable/lower
than fossil-fuel-based energy in many countries
2 Wind
Globally 111 GW of wind energy capacity was added in 2020, bringing the total to over 700 GW
3 Desalination
There are around 20,000 desalination plants in over 120 countries, with most concentrated in the MENA region
4 Electrolyzer
While small capacity electrolyzers have been around for a long time, modern electrolyzers facilitate utility-scale production allowing similar projects to come up in other regions across the globe
Air Separation Units ASUs are a proven and reliable technology with worldwide 5 (ASUs) applications in industrial processes including for grey
ammonia production to obtain nitrogen
6
Ammonia synthesis Haber Bosch process has been used for the production of (Haber-Bosch process) grey ammonia for decades
